Keruing
Keruing is widely scattered throughout the indo-Malayan region. More than 70 species make up this group, and they are marketed collectively. Timbers from Malaysia contain a large number of species and are most variable in properties. The trees vary with the species but they commonly reach heights of 100 to 200 ft. with clear, cylindrical boles 70 ft. long. The trunk of this tree diameters 3-6 ft., commonly with a small buttressed base.
Botanical Name: Dipterocarpaceae
Color: The heartwood of this wood varies from light to dark red brown, somtimes with a purple tint.
Grain: Keruing is very closed grained and straight to deeply interlocked.
Uses: Keruing is often used for flooring, general construction work, framework for boats, palets, chemical processing equipment, veneer and plywood also suggested for railroad crossties if treated.
Hardness: Keruing has a hardness of 1,520 on the Janka scale.
