Pyinkado
Pyinkado is a very hard, durable wood. This hardwood tree grows to a height of 120 ft. The trunk is straight, cylindrical and clear to 40 ft. The trunk diameters range to 4 ft. Its heartwood is extremely resistant to preservative treatments in industrial applications due to high content of natural oils. A water based finish is recommended. When finished this wood adds a feel of warmth and tradition to any home.
Botanical Name: Xylia xylocarpa
Other Names: Pyin, Burmese Ironwood
Color: The heartwood is golden to reddish brown with darker streaks, often locally specked with dark spots. The sapwood is a pale reddish white.
Grain: The grain can be straight, interlocked, or frequently wavy.
Uses: The ironwood is used for heavy durable construction, flooring, railway crossties, piers, harbor work and pilings.
Hardness: Pyinkado has a hardness of 2,275 on the Janka scale, which is twice as hard as North American Oak.
